ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle team looks to continue its improvement this weekend, when it hosts the University of the Sciences on Saturday at 9:00 am at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. It will be the final competition for the squad until October 29.
"We are looking to keep improving and keep getting better as a team," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We showed improvement from Saturday to Sunday last week and we had a good week of practice, so hopefully we can keep trending up. We want to shoot a good score and create some momentum heading into a three-week break."
Navy placed first out of five teams on day one of the season-opening MAC Tournament last week, but saw Akron outscore the Mids by two points on the second day. Despite placing second on Sunday, Navy showed a 17-point improvement (4591 to 4608) from Saturday to Sunday, which included an 11-point improvement in smallbore (2274 to 2285) and a six-point improvement in air rifle (2317 to 2323).
Leading Navy in both disciplines is junior Ryan Williams. The McDonald, Ohio, native is averaging a 582.0 in smallbore and a 587.0 in air rifle, including a 589 in Sunday's action last weekend. In smallbore, Williams is followed by Steven Frazier at 572.5, Allison Paulson with a 565.5 and Carol Boyd with a 558.0.
In air rifle, Paulson contributes a 583.5, Boyd a 575.5 and Frazier a 575.0.
Navy owns a 20-0 all-time record against the University of the Sciences.
Navy will be off until Oct. 29 when it travels to Boston to face MIT and Wentworth.
