ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy rifle team will host the University of the Sciences in its first dual match of the season on Saturday in Annapolis. Action will get underway at 8 a.m. at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Mids are coming off a pair of first-place showings at last weekend's two-day MAC Tournament. Meanwhile the Devils have previously defeated both VMI and Loyola.
Navy fired a combined score of 4604 in last Saturday's opener and then improved by three points the following day.
"It was a good start to a season with an inexperienced team," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We expect we get better each week, and with this many plebes, we have to get better."
The Navy roster features seven newcomers, several of which saw action last weekend. Freshman Jodi Cull-Host was Navy's top performer in the air rifle on Sunday by topping the field with a score of 587, while fellow freshmen Shawn Cleary and Zach Gibson were also part of the scoring group on both days.
Senior Ryan Williams and junior Steven Frazier led Navy in smallbore on both days and were among the team's top shooters in air rifle. Another bright spot for Navy last weekend was the performance of sophomore Alex Berry, who was part of the scoring group in smallbore on both days.
"We expect strong performances from Ryan and Steven every week and we've certainly got some youngsters in the mix," said Kelly.
Last season, Navy defeated the University of the Sciences on three occasions and is 23-0 all-time against the Devils. The two teams will meet again this season on Jan. 18 and 19 in Philadelphia.
The Mids will be looking to make the most of Saturday's match, as it will be their last in Annapolis until Feb. 3.
"We've got some tough road matches after this weekend is over, so we need to get our ducks in a row," said Kelley. "It's an important match."
