Navy Rifle Heads to Akron for GARC Matchup
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team will look to keep its momentum rolling this weekend with a Saturday morning matchup at the University of Akron. In a Great American Rifle Conference competition, the Mids will attempt to improve its team scoring for the third time in four meets, as well as knock off a skilled league opponent. The first shot between the Mids and Zips is set for 8:30 a.m. at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.
Last year, the two teams met a neutral site in Palmyra, Pa. in late January. Shooting shoulder-to-shoulder as part of the 18th Annual Palmyra Invitational, the Mids defeated the Zips, 4,640-4,594. Josh Watson and Kestrel Kuhne led Navy's effort at the meet as both shooters recorded 1,162 aggregate point totals. As a team, the Mids shot a 2,304 in smallbore and a 2,336 in air rifle.
Last Time Out
The Mids participated in the 2017 President's Trophy Match last Saturday at home. Taking on opponents from Air Force, Army and the Coast Guard, Navy finished third with 5,808 points (the event counts five scores). The Mids went down the line with Air Force (5,821) and Army (5,810) before getting edged at the end.
Navy's underclassmen showed strong in the meet with plebes Torrance Kang and Daniel Enger going one-two in the Mids' lineup with respective aggregates of 1,171 and 1,167. Kestrel Kuhne posted Navy's third-best aggregate score at 1,165. Kang trailed just Air Force's Sarah Sawicki (1,174) for the highest match aggregate over 34 participants.

Navy will step away from competition for two months for the holiday and exam seasons. The Mids will next be in action on January 19 and 21 with back-to-back home matches versus GARC foes, Nebraska (1/19) and West Virginia (1/21).
