Navy Squash Earns Road Win At George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  The 16th-ranked Navy squash team earned its 22nd win of the season by posting a 6-3 win over No. 15 George Washington (7-3) Wednesday evening at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center.  

“I was proud of the effort our team gave tonight in what was a very good win over a strong George Washington team,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson.

The bottom half of the Mids’ lineup continued to roll as freshmen Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) each won their 23rd match of the year.  Kacergis swept GW frosh Browning Platt, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 at the No. 7 slot, while Bottini picked up a 3-1 vcitory over senior Sam Ehrlich at the No. 8 position.  Meanwhile, senior Cotter Walker improved to 20-2 over his career with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 win over sophomore David Moxley at the No. 9 spot.

Sophomore Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.), the Mids’ No. 1 player, opened his match against GW’s Islam El-Fiky with an 11-5 win, when in the second game, trailing 5-2, El-Fiky rolled his ankle and was forced to withdraw from the competition.  The win was McGuinness’ 20th of the year.

Junior Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) dealt GW newcomer James Reiss just his second loss of the season in a marathon match, 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 12-10, while sophomore Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) rolled past Larkin Brinkworth, 3-0.

The Midshipmen will be back in action a week from Friday when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to face Connecticut College at 6:30 pm.  Navy will face sixth-ranked Yale a day later on Jan. 26 at 12:00 pm and close out the weekend with a 10:00 am matchup against Wesleyan on Sunday, Jan. 27.
