WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Playing its first road match since opening weekend on Nov. 3-4, the 13th-ranked Navy squash team picked up a 7-2 victory over #21 Williams Friday evening at the Simon Squash Center in Williamstown, Mass.  The win snapped a four-match losing by the Mids who will play three more matches on the road over the next two days.

Four of the nine matches between the Mids and Ephs were decided in five games with each team winning two.

Senior team captain Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) earned a big win at the No. 1 position for the Mids, posting a 3-2 decision over Williams junior John Fitzgerald.  The two exchanged wins before Herold was able to seal the victory in the fifth behind a 12-10 decision.  The win gives Herold sole possession of 17th on Navy’s all-time wins list with 61 for his career and a team-high tying 13 this season.

Also picking up a five-game victory for the Mids was senior Greg Hyer (Tenafly, N.J.), who came from behind to defeat third-year player William Ruggiero at the No. 9 position, 10-12, 12-10, 11-4, 6-11, 11-8.

Dropping heartbreakers were sophomore Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), who came from two games down to force a fifth game, and classmate Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.), who also was down two games before dropping an 11-7 decision in the fifth.

Three Navy players swept their opponent, including junior Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.) who defeated sophomore David Pincus en route to capturing his 53rd career win and earning his way onto the Mids’ all-time top-25 wins list.  He joins teammates Herold and Jack Lentz (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 13 wins this season.

Meanwhile, senior Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) has won three straight for the Mids, as he scored an 11-8, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9 win over junior Anand Butler at the No. 8 spot.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they play a neutral site match against #17 Dickinson at 8:00 am, followed by a 2:00 pm contest against host Amherst who stands 24th nationally.
