ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The Navy squash team enjoyed a successful weekend on the campus of Yale University where the 14th-ranked Mids produced a 3-1 record.

Navy opened tournament action on Friday evening when it delivered a 6-3 loss to 18th-ranked Middlebury.  Among the three losses was Jim Kacergis’ (Malvern, Pa.) five-game heartbreaker at the No. 1 position.  Meanwhile, among the wins was a three-game sweep by rookie Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) at No. 9 where head coach Craig Dawson said “it was one of Reed’s best matches of the year.”  Beck scored a 12-10, 11-4, 11-7 win over Middlebury freshman Ben Krant.

On Saturday, the Mids were faced with two fierce competitors in 12th-ranked Bates in the morning, followed by No. 2-ranked Yale in the afternoon.  Riding the momentum from Friday night’s match, the Mids looked tough in a 5-4 victory over Bates.  Among the highlights in the match was junior John Hsu’s (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) spectacular come-from-behind victory.  His foe, rookie Nima Olumi, won the first two games, 11-9 and 11-9, but Hsu carded a victory in the third game, 15-13, to extend the match.  Hsu edged Olumi in the fourth in another tough battle, 11-9, to force a fifth and deciding game.  Hsu picked up the match victory by way of a 12-10 advantage in the fifth.  Meanwhile, with the match tied up at four wins apiece, Navy freshman Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) stepped up to the challenge and sealed the win for the Mids.  Whitney defeated fellow freshman Darrius Campbell in four games.

The Bates win was particularly sweet for the Midshipmen, who not only had lost 10 of the previous 13 matches, but had surrendered back-to-back 5-4 decisions.

The Mids dropped their lone match of the weekend to the host Yale Bullodgs on Saturday afternoon, 8-1. Down 2-1 in his match to senior Charlie Wyatt, Whitney was leading the fourth game, 3-0, when an injury forced Wyatt to retire.  Whitney was awarded the victory to keep his flawless weekend record intact.  Sophomore Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) gave Yale freshman Liam McClintock all he could handle at the No. 6 position, including an 11-9 game one victory.  But McClintock was able to edge out Kacergis in the next three games, 13-11, 12-10, 12-10.

Navy wrapped up the weekend by scoring a 9-0 victory over Colby and improving its season record to 13-4.

Whitney was the lone Navy player to go undefeated over the weekend, as he improved to 13-4 on the year.  Meanwhile, sophomore Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) and Beck turned in 3-1 marks.  Bottini leads the squad with a 15-2 record as the Mids’ No. 3 player, while Beck is now 9-6 on the year.

The Midshipmen return to action next weekend when they travel to New York to battle Cornell (7:00 pm) on Friday and Hobart (10:00 am) on Saturday.
