Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The 14th-ranked Navy squash team fell to 14-8 on the season following a 6-3 loss to #15 Cornell Wednesday night at Drexel’s Kline & Specter Squash Center.  The match marked the seventh straight played on the road for the Mids who, prior to the current streak, had not played away from Annapolis since opening weekend (Nov. 3-4).

Second-year standout Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) opened his match at No. 2 against Cornell junior Perry Hanson with an 11-9 game-one victory.  Hanson, though, would level the match with his own 11-9 win in the second.  Kacergis went on to take the lead in the third with an 11-2 lead before closing out the match with an 11-4 victory in the fourth.

Junior Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) continued his strong play with a 3-0 sweep against senior Seb Obieta-Chichizola at the No. 6 position.  Sweeney has won three in a row and over the weekend earned his way onto the Mids’ all-time top 25 wins list.  Wednesday win gives Sweeney 55 for his career as he moved into a tie for 23rd on the list.

Taking the Mids’ final win of the evening was senior Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) who has been a beacon of consistency throughout his Navy career.  McCartney, who is among Navy’s all-time top 10 in career winning percentage, captured his 15th win of the season behind a 3-0 victory against Cornell sophomore James Paolella.

Sophomore Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.) came up short for the fourth time this season in a five-game match.  After falling behind, 2-0, Davis fought back to even the match with wins in game three (13-11) and four (11-1) against Cornell’ rookie Illia Presman.  Presman, however, would take the marathon match with an 11-9 win in the fifth.

The Midshipmen will get an eight-day break before returning to competition on Friday, Feb. 9.  Navy will play host to Middlebury in its final home match of the season and will honor its three senior members - team captain Jack Herold, Greg Hyer and Sam McCartney - prior to the start of the match at 5:00 pm.
