ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The 14th-ranked squash team (14-5) went 1-1 on the weekend, dropping an 8-1 decision to eighth-ranked Cornell on Friday night before regrouping to take an 8-1 victory over No. 28 Hobart on Saturday morning.

Navy junior Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) was the lone Navy player to post an undefeated mark on the weekend, as he picked up a 13-11, 6-11, 15-13, 11-7 victory over Cornell’s Kevin Flannery at the No. 4 spot and cruised to an 11-9, 11-7, 11-6 win against Hobart’s Felipe Pantle at the No. 3 flight.  Barry now owns a 12-7 record on the year and has won three in a row.

Freshman Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) nearly swept his foes for the weekend, but dropped a hearbreaker to Cornell’s Harry Freeman on Friday evening.  Beck took a 2-1 lead (11-7, 9-11, 11-8), but dropped the final two games, 11-6 and 11-7, to succumb to Freeman in five games.  Beck, however, bounced back to score a 3-1 win over Hobart’s Scott Marcus.

Junior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) dropped his opening game to Hobart’s No. 1 player Billy Abrams and was down 10-7 in the second game when he rallied to come from behind for a 13-11 win.  He went on to take the match with 11-4 and 11-3 victories in games three and four, respectively.

Sophomores Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) and Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) sat out the Hobart match after suffering injuries against Cornell, opening the way for freshman Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) to move into the lineup against Hobart.  Walker scored an 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 win over Art Martella in just his third varsity appearance of the year.

Navy’s lone loss to Hobart was at No. 9 where the short-handed Mids had to default the match to Ben Shapiro.

The Midshipmen will play their final regular-season match of the year next Saturday at No. 6 Franklin & Marshall beginning at 3:00 pm.
