LANCASTER, Pa. — The 13th-ranked Navy squash team (14-6) dropped an 8-1 decision to fifth-ranked Franklin & Marshall (14-3) Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. in what was the Mids’ final regular-season match of the season.
Navy’s lone win of the match came at the No. 7 position where rookie Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) fought his way to a five-game decision over the Diplomats’ Dylan Cunningham. Whitney won the opening game, 11-8, but stumbled in the next two, 11-9 and 11-2, forcing him to rally in the fourth. The youngster took a 13-11 victory in the fourth to even the match before scoring an 11-6 win in the deciding match. With the win, Whitney improved to 15-5 on the year, tying with Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) for the most wins on the team.
Junior Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) came just shy of taking the win at the No. 2 position against Franklin & Marshall’s Jack Cutler. McGuinness took a 2-0 lead with back-to-back 11-9 victories. Cutler, however, was able to stop McGuinness’ momentum with a game-three victory, 11-9, Cutler used that shift in momentum to take game four, 11-6, and managed a 16-14 decision in the fifth to give the Diplomats the point.
At the No. 9 position, Franklin & Marshall’s Brian Henry needed five games to take the win over Navy rookie Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). Beck opened with a 12-10 win, however Henry bounced back to take the next two games by mirroring 11-7 scores. Beck regrouped and won the fourth, 11-8, but Henry pulled out the victory in the fifth, 11-8, to take the match win.
The Midshipmen return to action next Friday when Navy travels to Boston, Mass. to take part in the College Squash Association Team Championship. Pairings will be announced in the coming days.
