ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The 13th-ranked Navy squash team (18-5) built a 4-0 lead over #16 Franklin & Marshall (7-11) Sunday afternoon in its regular-season finale, but after three straight wins by the Diplomats Navy head coach Craig Dawson needed one of his final two players to step up.  Sophomore Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.), the Mids’ #7 player on the ladder, answered the call with a 3-1 victory to clinch the 5-4 team win by the Mids.

The first round of action featured the #3, #6 and #9 players on the ladder.  Navy cruised to victories in all three including Owen Davis (Fr / Rydal, Pa.) who dispatched Franklin & Marshall rookie Shams Abbas in four games at #3.  After the Diplomats’ King Bassett knotted the match up at #9, Sam McCartney (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) won the final two games, 11-6 and 11-4, to secure the 3-1 victory.  Meanwhile, making his final appearance on his home court, senior Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) earned a 3-1 win over F&M’s Jack McCord to give Navy a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) swept second-year F&M standout Samm Fulton at the #5 spot to push the Mids’ advantage to 4-0.

Sparked by a 3-1 victory by sophomore Silvio Soom over the Mids’ Senen Ubina (So / Greenwich, Conn.) at the #2 position, the Diplomats won three in a row to trim Navy’s lead to just one with the #7 and #1 matches remaining.

Kjorlien opened his match against F&M senior Gavan Hitchenor with an 11-9 win, but Hitchenor leveled the score with a 12-10 win in the second.  Kjorlien, however, went on to win games three and four, 11-7 and 11-6, to defeat Hitchenor and clinch the Navy victory.

The final match of the day featured the ladder’s #1 players in Jack Herold (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) for Navy and Cole Osborne for F&M.  A gutsy match by both players, the two traded victories to force a game five.  They went toe to toe before Osborne edged Herold 14-12.

While Navy owns a 35-22 series lead over the Diplomats, including a 24-6 advantage in matches played in Annapolis, it marked just the second win by the Mids in the last 11 matches between the two programs.  It was Navy’s first win over F&M in Annapolis since Feb. 17, 2007.

The Mids return to action next Friday when they compete in the annual College Squash Association Team Championship in Cambridge, Mass.  The brackets complete with times will be released by the CSA later this week.
