Bates Upsets Navy at CSA Team Championship
Feb. 15, 2014
BOSTON, Mass. — After dropping a 6-3 decision to 12th-seeded Dartmouth on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the College Squash Association Team Championship, No. 12 Navy (14-8) dropped a 7-2 decision to 16th-seeded Bates on Saturday morning in the consolation bracket.
Navy earned its two wins in the match thanks to a pair of freshmen. Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) dropped his opening set against Jason Shrubb, but came back to win three straight 11-5 sets to take the match in four games at the No. 8 position. Meanwhile, Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) made his CSA Championship debut on Saturday after sophomore Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Walker played a strong match in relief, picking up an 11-9, 11-7, 11-1 victory over Carlos Ames at No. 9.
Five of Navy’s seven losses were in extra frames, including three five-set losses. Navy junior Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Bates’ Ahmed Sherif Hatata traded wins with Hatata posting an 11-8 win in the fifth to take the match at No. 2. Junior Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) won his first two sets against Bates’ Darrius Campbell at the No. 4 position, but Campbell rallied to win three straight in his five-game victory. Meanwhile, Navy rookie Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) surrendered an 11-5 loss in the fifth game against Caran Arora at the No. 6 slot.
“We had a number of matches that were close, but quite honestly we did not play well,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson.
The Midshipmen will close out action at the CSA Team Championship at Harvard on Sunday when they will play Drexel for the No. 15/16 finish beginning at 9:00 am.
