PRINCETON, N.J. — The 11th-seeded Navy squash team (21-7) fell short in its opening match at the College Squash Association Team Championship Friday afternoon, dropping a 5-4 decision to 14th-seeded Columbia.  Navy posted a 7-2 victory over the Lions during the regular season in a match played in Annapolis.

The Mids won three of the four even matches, including the No. 2 position where Navy rookie Hunter Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) dealt Columbia’s Tony Zou a 3-1 loss.  Abrams built a 2-0 advantage before Zou rallied to take game three, 11-4.  Abrams, however, sealed the win thanks to an 11-9 win in the fourth.

Junior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) also scored a 3-1 victory over his foe, freshman Daniel Saleem, at the No. 4 slot.  Like Abrams, Bouchard jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with 11-2 and 11-9 wins before Saleem scored a 13-11 victory in the third game.  Bouchard, however, took the match with an 11-7 win in the fourth.  He is now 5-2 all-time at the CSA Team Championship.

Taking the win at the No. 6 position was junior Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.), who improved to 18-2 on the year with an 11-5, 14-12, 11-3 sweep over Alec Goldberg.

Navy’s final win of the day came at the No. 9 slot where sophomore Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) knocked off second-year standout Theo Buchsbaum in four.  A tight match, Beck dropped the opening game, 11-9, but rallied to take the remaining games, 11-9, 11-8 and 11-6 to win the match.

Three of the five matches the Mids lost were 3-0 sweeps with freshman Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and junior John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) losing in four games to their respective opponents.

“The team is disappointed to lose this match because of how well we played against them earlier in the year, but I am confident that we’ll be able to regroup and give a strong effort tomorrow,” said 12th-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson.

The Midshipmen will play the loser of the Williams vs. Brown match Saturday at 9:00 am.
