#14 Cornell Upsets #11 Navy at CSA Team Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Meeting for the first time since 2014, the 14th-ranked Cornell squash team (7-10) defeated 11th-ranked Navy (18-6) 8-1 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Hoehn Cup at the 2017 College Squash Association Team Championship played at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
Capturing the Mids’ lone win of the day was junior Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) who produced an 11-4, 11-1, 11-8 sweep over Cornell’s Andrew Stone at the #9 position. McCartney is now 5-2 all-time at the CSA Team Championship, winning five straight matches dating back to his rookie year.
Junior Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Cornell’s Harry Freeman at the #1 spot to force a game five. Freeman, however, closed out the match with an 11-3 decision in the fifth to turn back Herold. Meanwhile, rookie Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Big Red’s Jordan Brail at #4, but Brail battled back to win three in a row for the match win.
Senen Ubina (So / Greenwich, Conn.), Jamie Kjorlien (So / Greenwich, Conn.) and Alex Patricolo (So / Southampton, N.Y.) lost their respective matches in four games.
The Mids fall to the consolation bracket where they will face #15 Bates (lost 5-4 to #10 Princeton) on Saturday at 3:00 pm. It will be the first meeting this season between the two programs.
