Navy Squash Concludes Play at the CSA Team Championships With a Win

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 11th-seeded Navy squash team (23-7) won its second straight match at the Collegiate Squash Association's team championship, defeating No. 13 Middlebury (16-9), 5-4, to conclude the team portion of it season. Navy, playing in the CSA's Hoehn Cup (B Division), ends its competition at the CSA Team Championships with a 13th-place finish.

"We finished strong today and it was a classic 5-4 win," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "It all came down to 4-4 with Andrew McGuinness left on the court and he crushed the senior number one player from Middlebury."

Freshman Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) played the role of the hero on Sunday, easily defeating Middlebury's top man in Valentine Quan, 11-7, 14-2, 11-2.

All the other matches were completed and the overall score was tied at 4-4, but McGuinness' dominant third set (11-2) clinched the win for Navy. McGuinness pushed his season record at No. 1 to 17-10.

Junior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del) won at No. 4, taking down Spencer Hurst, 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 and is now 18-10 on the year. Freshman Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) was victorious at No. 5, beating Cooper Redpath, 12-10, 11-9, 11-5. Barry leads the team in wins this season and is now 22-6.

The depth in Navy's lineup was important on Sunday, as the Mids won at No. 8 and No. 9. No. 8 John Richey (Jr, West Hartford Conn.) defeated Willy Clarke, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 and No. 9 Hunter Beck (So., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) defeated Chris Ivsin, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5.

Navy had a pair of tough losses at No. 2 and No. 3. Hunter Abrams (Fr., Wilmington, Del.) suffered a five-set loss to Jay Dolan at No. 2 and No. 3 Jim Kacergis (Fr., Malvern, Pa.) dropped a four-setter to Parker Hurst.

Earlier this season on December 3rd, Middlebury had defeated Navy, 5-4.

Navy will next compete in the College Squash Association's Individual Championships from March 2-4 in Amherst, Mass.
