Mids Defeat Western Ontario, Place 13th at CSA Team Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The 11th-ranked Navy squash team closed out the team portion of its schedule by avenging a regular-season loss to 12th-ranked Western Ontario, defeating the Mustangs 7-2 on Sunday afternoon to place 13th at the College Squash Association Team Championship. The 13th-place is the Mids’ best finish at the championship since placing 13th in 2011-12. Navy, meanwhile, finishes the season 20-6, marking the ninth time in head coach Craig Dawson’s 17-year tenure it has won 20 or more matches and the 11th time in the program’s 69-year history.
Sam McCartney (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) concluded the championship weekend by winning his seventh straight match at the CSA Team Championship dating back to his freshman season. He scored an 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 victory over the Mustangs’ Alie Kargbo at the #9 position. Meanwhile, freshman Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.), sophomores Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.), Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) and Alex Patricolo (Southampton, N.Y.) and senior Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) all picked up their second win of the weekend.
Coming off a big 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon, Walker closed out his Navy career with a five-game come-from-behind victory on Sunday against Farzin Habib-Pour at #6. Walker cruised in the opener, 11-1, but Habib-Pour won the next two 11-8 and 11-8 to take the lead. Walker, however, battled back to win the final two games, 11-6 and 11-8, to finish the season 14-9.
Sweeney won his match against Adam Vanwyngaarden by a 3-0 count, but two of the three games were marathon matches. Sweeney scored his 19th win over the year via an 18-16, 14-12, 11-9 victory.
Davis, Kjorlien and Patricolo, meanwhile, all won their matches in three games.
Senen Ubina (So / Greenwich, Conn.) picked up his first win of the weekend behind a 3-1 victory over David Mill. Ubina jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Mill forced a fourth game with an 11-7 win in the third. Ubina sealed the win by an 11-4 decision.
Navy’s only two losses in the match were hard fought as #1 player Jack Herold (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) dropped a five-game decision to Matthew Henderson and Michael Kacergis (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) fell in five to Husam Hamour.
While the team portion of the schedule has ended, a handful of individuals will represent Navy at the CSA Individual Championship held at Dartmouth the weekend of March 3-5.
