NEW HAVEN, Conn. —  For the second time this season, Bates was able to edge the Mids by a 5-4 count, this time in the consolations bracket of the 2013 College Squash Association Team Championship.

The two teams were knotted up with three wins apiece going into the final round of matches.  Navy junior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss in the opening round to Columbia’s Mohammed AbdelMaksoud and scored a big 3-1 victory over Bates’ Kristian Muldoon.  Kacergis lost the opening game, 11-5, but rallied to win the next three.  Meanwhile, both freshman Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) and senior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) won their first CSA Team Championship matches in the consolation round.  Bottini, who alongside fellow rookie Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) has won a team-best 26 matches, defeated Caran Arora at the No. 8 slot, while Walker posted a 3-1 victory over Jason Shrubb at the No. 9 position.

Bates took a 4-3 advantage when top-seeded Ahmed Abdel Khalek swept Navy sophomore Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.).  However, Navy senior captain John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) evened the match by rallying late in his match against Filip Michalsky to take the match in the fifth behind a 13-11 victory.  Richey is the only Navy player to win both of his matches at the CSA Team Championship.

Deadlocked at 4-4, the final match featured fourth-seeded R.J. Keating of Bates and Navy senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.).  Keating jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Bouchard fought his way back in it to take the third game, 11-9,  Keating, however, was able to quell Bouchard’s comeback and won the fourth game, 11-5, to clinch the victory for the Bobcats.

The Midshipmen will close out play at the CSA Team Championship on Sunday at 11:30 pm when they face Brown for the 15th/16th place spots.
