NEW HAVEN, Conn. — After dropping its first two matches at the College Squash Association Team Championship, the Navy squash team closed out its season with a 7-2 victory over Brown to place 15th at this year’s national tournament. The Mids, meanwhile, finished the year with a 25-9 record posting the program’s ninth 20-win season including the seventh under 13th-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson.
“I was extremely proud of the way the team played today and in particular I thought it was an Oscar-winning performance by all three of our seniors,” said Dawson.
Navy received an inspirational win by senior team captain John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) who was the lone player on the roster to win all three of his matches in what was his final weekend of competition as a collegiate player. Richey completed his weekend sweep with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Tod Holberton. Richey opened with a 12-10 win, but Holberton took game two by the same score to even the match. Richey again won game three by a 12-10 margin, but Holberton claimed game four, 11-8. Richey closed out the match in the fifth with an 11-6 win. He ends his career with a 92-32 record, tying former teammate and All-American Nils Mattsson (2006-10) for the second-most wins under Dawson.
Senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) fought back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Brown freshman Jack Blasberg. Blasberg won the first two games, 11-9 and 11-4, before Bouchard put his rally cap on and took game three, 11-9. He evened the match with an 11-8 win in the fourth before taking the match in the fifth, 11-9.
Meanwhile, senior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) capped a great senior season with a 3-1 victory over senior Alexander Hsu. Hsu opened with a 12-10 win, but Walker also rallied to win his 19th match of the year. He took game two 12-10 and game three 13-11 before cruising to an 11-7 victory in the fourth.
Freshmen Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) picked up wins at the No. 6 and 8 spots, respectively, to finish with matching 27-5 records to pace the Mids. The 27 wins are tied as the second-most wins by a Navy player during the Dawson era and the most since former team captain Jeff Sawin set the record with a 28-4 record during the 2006-07 campaign. Kacergis beat freshman Michael Snower in three games, while Bottini also swept his foe, junior Charles Lebovitz, in three games.
Also taking wins Sunday morning were sophomores Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.), who not only finished the 2-1, but swept each of their foes in the final match of the weekend.
