Mids Finish 15th at College Squash Association Team Championship
HARTFORD, Conn. — Seeded 16th in the Hoehn Division of the 2018 College Squash Association Team Championship, Navy (17-10) closed out the three-day tournament by defeating Cornell Sunday morning in a hard-fought 5-4 decision to place 15th.
The Mids opened the tournament with a 7-2 loss against ninth-seeded Yale and fell to 0-2 on Saturday after dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker to 12th-seeded Drexel. In Sunday’s consolation playoff, the Mids clipped the Big Red thanks to the dominant play of the mid to lower half of the ladder. Among the Mids’ four losses against Cornell, two were in five games. The victory snapped a 13-match losing streak against the Big Red and marked Navy’s first win over Cornell since Feb. 10, 1996.
All five of the Mids’ victories over Cornell were sweeps, including junior Senen Ubina’s (Greenwich, Conn.) 11-4, 11-6, 11-4 win over Illia Presman to close out the year with a team-best 21 wins (21-5), while taking sole possession of 18th on the Mids’ career wins list.
Ubina was one of four Navy players to post a 2-1 record at the team championship. Joining him on that list was classmate Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) who posted an 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 win against Cornell’s Luke Park. Kjorlien, who closed out the year with a 16-9 record, also joined the Mids’ all-time wins list where he currently is tied for 24th alongside David Koenig (2009-14) with a 55-24 career mark.
Senior Sam McCartney’s (Chicago, Ill.) career came to a close on Sunday where he, too, posted a 2-1 record over the weekend. McCartney fell just short of the 20-win milestone this season with a 19-6 mark, while he was also just shy of 50 career wins, posting a 49-16 record. He was spectacular for the Mids when it counted, tallying a 9-3 career mark at the CSA Team Championship in four seasons.
Sophomore Owen Davis (Rydal, Pa.) was the final Navy player who was able to post a winning record this weekend, capturing wins against Drexel’s Nathaniel Fry (3-2) and Cornell’s E-Bird Rothweiler (3-0). Davis closed the year with an 18-9 record.
Senior Greg Hyer (Tenafly, N.J.), junior Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Jack Lentz (Philadelphia, Pa.) put together 1-2 records at the tournament. For Hyer, his 3-2 win over Cornell’s Kenan Ong marked his first collegiate victory in what was his first appearance at the CSA Team Championship. Sweeney will head into next season tied for 21st on the Mids’ all-time wins list with All-American Tucker George (2004-08), while Lentz finished the year with a 20-7 record and was one of just two Navy players to reach 20 wins for the season.
While the team portion of the season has officially concluded, Navy will have at least one player participate in the CSA Individual Championship slated to be played in Washington, D.C. March 2-4.
