HARTFORD, Conn. — The 2012-13 Navy squash season officially came to a close over the weekend as Navy sophomores Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) represented the Naval Academy at the 2013 College Squash Association Individual Championship held at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
McGuinness received an opening-round bye before sweeping St. Lawrence’s Kyle Ogilvy, 11-8, 17-15, 11-6, to move on to the round of 16. For the second straight year, McGuinness’ run would end in that round, dropping a heart breaker to Williams’ Nick Marks in five games. McGuinness opened up with an 11-9 win, but lost back-to-back game before knotting it at two games apiece with an 11-9 win in the fourth. Marks took the match with an 11-7 win in the fifth.
Kacergins also earned an opening-round victory by way of a three-game sweep over Franklin & Marshall’s Antonio DeLa Torre, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6. However, Brown’s Blake Reinson scored a 3-1 victory over Kacergis in the round of 32, sending the second-year Navy standout to the second consolation round. Kacergis defeated Yale’s Eric Caine in three games, 14-12, 11-2, 11-4, but bowed out in the consolation quarters to Cornell’s Ryan Todd in three games.
