ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The Navy squash team opened its 2012-13 season Friday evening at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts by scoring a pair of 9-0 sweeps over Virginia and Bard on the opening day of the Navy Squash Invitational.  Navy is among 13 teams participating in this year’s three-day event which will see the Mids in action three times on Saturday and twice on Sunday.

Navy earned its first victory of the season with a 9-0 decision against Virginia, where sophomore Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) took a 3-0 victory over the Cavaliers’ Matt Brown.  Kacergis is one of four sophomores who played on the Mids’ nine-man ladder, while two freshmen were also in action in what is one of head coach Craig Dawson’s youngest lineups in recent memory.

Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), the younger brother of Jim Kacergis, earned his first collegiate victory by way of an 11-4, 11-4, 11-2 win over Virginia’s Campbell Goodman, while fellow newcomer Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) posted an 11-3, 11-3, 11-1 win over George Guthrie for his first career victory.   Kacergis went on to blank Oscar Valdes of Bard in the nightcap, while Bottini surrendered just two points, one each in the second and third games, to Houston Stebbins of Bard.

Meanwhile, senior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore John Hsu (Manhassett, N.Y.) kept their unbeaten streaks alive on Friday.  Walker improved to his career record to 7-0 with 3-0 victories over Virginia’s Rob Patterson and Bard’s Jeremy Goldsher.  Hsu now stands 11-0 with sweeps over Peter Dorsey of Virginia and Haya Dandis of Bard.

Team captain John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomores Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Hunter Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) also captured a pair of wins on opening day.

Navy will play the first of its three matches on Saturday beginning at 9:00 am against Bucknell.
