SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. —  The Navy squash team scored a pair of 9-0 victories over Cal and Stanford at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. over the weekend to open the 2013-14 season with a 2-0 mark.  The Midshipmen now own a combined 23-0 record against their West Coast foes.

“We had a successful trip out to California, beating both Cal and Stanford,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson, who is in his 13th season.  “We had great support at both matches and I would like to say a special thank you to Al Dessayer (Class of ‘61) and his wife, Alice, who attended the Cal match.

“Cal and Stanford were great competitors and hosts this weekend.  I thought we played a strong match, in particular, against Stanford.”

Navy did not drop a game during their two-day stay in San Francisco and saw newcomers Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) and Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) earn victories in their first collegiate matches.  Whitney, who played at the No. 5 position, opened his Navy career with an 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 vcitory over Cal’s Axel Eriksson and followed up with an 11-6, 12-10, 11-2 win over Wyatt Hong of Stanford.  Meanwhile, Beck produced an 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 win over Cal’s Aditya Gupta at the No. 9 slot, while also defeating Stanford’s Peter Satterthwaite, 11-2, 11-1, 11-2.

Junior John Hsu (Jackson Heights, N.Y.), who saw action among the ladder in just nine matches a year ago, settled into the No. 8 slot where he picked up wins over Cal’s Kjell Ferdinand Ekman (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) and Stanford’s Will Sternlicht (11-3, 11-2, 11-5).  He now owns a 20-1 career record.
