ANNAPOLIS, Md. — With a pair of 9-0 wins over Denison and Georgetown at the Navy Squash Veterans Weekend Round Robin on Sunday, the Midshipmen pushed their unbeaten streak to 13 after the first two weeks of the season. Navy began the weekend with a 7-0 record, adding a pair of wins in each of the last three days.
“We’ve had two good weekends of squash and while I think we are playing well, we still have room for improvement,” said Navy squash coach Craig Dawson. “I think our conditioning has paid off over these two weeks, playing multiple matches in a day.”
While Navy won both of its matches by a 2-0 count, a match against both Denison and Georgetown went into four games. Rookie Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) needed an extra game to put away Denison freshman Andrew Krayacich at the No. 1 slot, as Kacergis built a 2-0 lead before Krayacich nipped Kacergis in the third, 12-10. Kacergis, however, took the match in the fourth with an 11-5 win.
Sophomore Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.), who missed last weekend due to injury, got back on the court this weekend and was pushed to four games in his match against Georgetown’s Austin Dixon. Barry took game one 11-4, but Dixon evened the match with an 11-9 game two victory. Barry went on to outlast Dixon with 11-8 and 11-9 wins in the third and fourth.
Five players competed in all six matches this weekend, including sophomore Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) who was 5-0 at the No. 2 slot and 1-0 playing the No. 1 position against Washington (St. Louis). Senior John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) is now 81-23 over his career after adding six wins to his ledger this weekend, while senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) became just the fifth player under Dawson to reach the 75-win milestone, taking his 75th win on Friday evening against Johns Hopkins. He is now 79-26 over four seasons.
Meanwhile, making his varsity debut was senior Jack Shinnick (Shrewsbury, N.J.) who picked up an 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 victory over Denison’s Ben Cole at the No. 9 position.
While Navy has faced 13 different teams this season, the program has played host to tournaments on back-to-back weekends with 24 schools participating overall. Navy’s top-notch 12-court facilities at Halsey Field House and Bancroft Hall have provided the opportunity for schools from as far West as the University of Washington, neighboring teams like Georgetown and Bucknell and those hailing from the Midwest like Washington (St. Louis) and Denison to play multiple matches in one weekend.
The Midshipmen will face their first road test of the year when they travel to Hamilton College next Friday for a 4:00 pm match and will then face Colgate on Saturday at 10:00 am. Navy returns home next Sunday to play host to Bates at 10:00 am.
