ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The 15th-ranked Navy squash team scored a 5-4 win over No. 21 Drexel and a 9-0 victory over Hobart on Saturday at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts in Annapolis to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The middle portion of the lineup helped spearhead the Mids’ win over Drexel, as the Mids took the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions.  Navy and Drexel split the first four matches with senior captain Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) scoring a 3-1 victory over Drexel rookie Noel Solomon while Navy freshman Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) cruised to an 11-9, 12-10, 11-9 win at No. 5.

Drexel, meanwhile, was able to edge out junior Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) at No. 3 and sophomore Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) at No. 7 in five-game matches.  Barry won games two and four against Drexel’s Michael Thompson, however Thompson won the fifth and deciding game, 12-10.  Meanwhile, Kacergis took a 1-0 advantage and later knotted the match in the fourth against Drexel sophomore Joey Gingold, but Gingold scored an 11-6 victory in the fifth to take the match.

The Mids’ John Hsu (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) picked up a 14-12, 11-4, 11-6 win over Drexel senior Ben Bevan, however, Drexel rookie Nat Fry earned a come-from-behind win over Navy newcomer Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in four.

With the match even at 3-3, Navy junior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) took the court in matches played simultaneously.  Kacergis played a near-flawless match as he dispatched Drexel senior Justin Singh in three games, while Bottini clinched the team victory for the Mids with a 13-11, 11-8, 11-3 win over Drexel sophomore Mark Kauf.

Junior Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) won his opening game over Drexel junior Ibrahim Bakir, but bowed out in four games.

In the nightcap, the Mids scored a 9-0 victory over Hobart and won all nine matches in three games.  McGuinness picked up an 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 victory over former teammate Billy Abrams, while Navy senior David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up an 11-5, 11-1, 11-2 win over Hobart freshman Krittapat Pranich.  For Koenig, it was his first weekend back playing with the varsity team after missing last season having suffered a serious injury.

The Mids will close out action at the Navy Squash Round Robin on Sunday when they battle Bucknell at 9:30 am, followed by a 12:00 pm match against Georgetown.
