- The Navy men's squash team suffered its first defeat of the season to No. 7 Dartmouth (1-0), 8-1, on Saturday in Halsey Field House. Navy, the No. 15 team in the nation, falls to 12-1 on the season.
"Although we did play well in spots, and we certainly had our moments, we just couldn't pull out the final matches," Navy head coach Craig Dawson said.
Junior John Richey (Owings Mills, Md.) was the lone victorious Mid on the day, earning an 11-3, 13-11, 3-11, 3-11, 11-4 win over Mark Funk in the No. 9 singles position. Richey's win improves his career record to 57-17 and he moves into a tie with Michael Beautyman ('09) for 13th place on Navy's career wins chart.
No. 1 Andrew McGuinness (Fr. / Merion Station, Pa.) took the opening game off Dartmouth's Chris Hanson, 12-10, but dropped the next three to fall in the match. Hanson is a two-time All-American and finished last year's season ranked No. 10 nationally.
Junior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) also faced an opponent who was ranked at the end of last season in Nick Sisodia (No. 31). Sisodia defeated Bouchard, 11-8, 11-8, 11-3.
Freshman Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) took a hard-fought loss at No. 3 to Luke Lee. Kacergis went up 2-1 in the match, but fell 12-10 in game number four, before Lee finished him off with an 11-1 fifth game.
Junior Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) also went the distance in his match at No. 8 against Fletcher Pease. Abrams took the first two games, 11-7, 11-6 but Pease won the final three to take the match at 3-2.
In 2010, Dartmouth defeated Navy, 9-0.
Navy will return to action on December 3 with a pair of matches against No. 10 Williams and No. 14 Middlebury in Williamstown, Mass.
