Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Anchored by undefeated performances by Senen Ubina (Jr. / Greenwich, Conn.) and Owen Davis (So. / Rydal, Pa.), the 14th-ranked Navy squash team improved to 10-2 on the season after winning four of its five matches over the weekend at the Mids’ round robin held at Halsey Field House and Bancroft Hall.  The Mids earned wins over #22 MIT (8-1), Stanford (9-0), #26 Hobart (9-0) and #33 Denison (9-0) before closing out the weekend with a 7-2 loss to #5 Penn.

Ubina not only turned in a flawless 5-0 mark on the weekend that featured an exciting four-game victory over 2016 All-American Marwan Mahmoud of Penn, the third-year standout also captured his 50th career win.  Ubina opened Sunday morning’s action with a 3-0 sweep over Denison’s Henry Rosenberg to earn win No. 50 as he stands 51-20 over his career.

Also earning his 50th career win was junior Dylan Sweeney (Jr. / New York, N.Y.), who recorded a 4-1 mark over the weekend.  He, too, earned his 50th win in the match against Denison where he scored an 11-4, 11-4, 11-6 victory over Michael Ferrick.  He owns a 50-16 career record.

Michael Kacergis (So. / Malvern, Pa.), the Mids’ No. 1 player on the ladder, was forced into extra games in two of his five matches.  He fell behind in his match against MIT (11-9), but came back to defeat Joe O’Connor in four games.  Meanwhile, his match against Hobart’s Josh Oakley was a see-saw affair as the two traded games until Kacergis ran away in game five with an 11-2 win for the match victory.  Kacergis improved to 10-2 on the year.

Rookie Jack Lentz (Philadelphia, Pa.) nearly kept his unbeaten streak alive, winning each of his first 11 matches in a Navy uniform, but came up short in five games against 2016 All-American Hayes Murphy.  After falling behind 0-1 in the match, Lentz fought back to take games two and three, 11-8 and 11-7, respectively.  Murphy, however, came back to level the match with an 11-5 game-four win before defeating Lentz in the fifth, 11-6.

Team captain Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) went 4-1 on the weekend that featured a spectacular come-from-behind win over MIT’s Henry Martin.  Herold trailed two-games-to-one before rallying to earn an 11-4 and 11-8 win in games four and five, respectively, to secure the win.  With a 59-28 career record, Herold moved into 18th on Navy’s all-time wins list under Dawson and needs just one more victory to become one of just 18 players in program history to win 60 career matches.

Senior Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) had a fine weekend perfomance that saw him win four of five matches.  His biggest win of the weekend was against Hobart where he found himself in a two-game-to-none deficit.  The cagey veteran edged out Jack Shannon in the third, 12-10, and used the momentum to propel him to a five-game victory.

Davis won all five of his matches, including the first four by 3-0 counts.  In his match against Penn, he dropped the opening game 11-9 to Jonathan Zeitels before tying the match in the second with an 11-5 win.  Davis held a 10-0 advantage in the third game when Zeitels dropped out of the match due to injury.

Also competing for the Mids over the weekend were Jamie Kjorlien (Jr. / Greenwich, Conn.) with a 1-2 mark, Alex Patricolo (Jr. / Southampton, N.Y.) with a 3-0 record, John Kacergis (Jr. / Malvern, Pa.) with a 2-0 record and Greg Hyer (Sr. / Tenafly, N.J.) with a 1-1 mark.

The Midshipmen will play their final match on Dec. 2 against Dartmouth (10:00 am) before stepping aside for final exams and the holiday break.
