ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The Navy squash team enjoyed a successful trip to the New England region over the weekend, picking up three wins to improve to 9-0 this season.  The 15th-ranked Mids scored a 9-0 win over No. 23 Connecticut College, a 5-4 victory over No. 16 Brown and a 7-2 triumph over No. 18 Wesleyan.

“We are off to a good start, but we need to keep working over the holiday break,” said Craig Dawson, who is in his 13th seasons as the Mids’ head coach.  “We played well throughout the weekend and I was definitely pleased with pulling out a squaker at Brown.  They have a really nice facility and there was a good crowd for the match.”

Three players put together undefeated marks over the weekend, including junior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and sophomore Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) who are the lone players who are unbeaten this season (6-0).  Among Kacergis’ wins was a 3-0 victory over Wesleyan’s Guy Davidson who Kacergis lost to a year ago.  The third-year Navy player also came back after dropping his opening game to Brown’s Jack Blasberg to win the match 3-1.  With the three wins, Kacergis is now just one away from the 50-win milestone at 49-22.

Bottini, meanwhile, had a tougher road this weekend needed four games in his wins over Connecticut College and Brown.  He jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Ben Thaler of Connecticut College, but dropped game three, 11-9.  He charged back to take the match with an 11-5 win.  His match against Brown’s Alex Baldock was similar, winning the first two games before stumbling, 12-10, in the third.  Again he regrouped and won in four with an 11-7 win.  Bottini, who led Navy in wins a year ago, owns a 36-6 mark in his second season.

Kacergis’ younger brother, Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), also turned in a 3-0 mark over the weekend which featured a strong 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 decision over Brown’s Tod Holberton.  Along with Bottini, he also led the Mids in wins a year ago, and now stands 35-7 over his career.

Freshman Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) put together one of his best performances of the season with an 11-8, 11-5, 11-7 win over Brown’s Ross Freiman-Mendel to help the Mids seal the 5-4 victory, while junior Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) gave a gutsy performance against Wesleyan’s John Steele, a former high school teammate at Episcopal Academy.  McGuinness jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Steele fought back to win the next two games.  McGuinness took game four, 11-6, to knot the match at two wins apiece.  Steele looked to be in the driver’s seat in game five as he led 6-2.  McGuinness, however, rallied back to win the fifth game 11-6 and the match.

The Mids will play their final two matches before the holiday break on Dec. 5 against 14th-ranked Penn (6:30 pm) and Dec. 6 against No. 10 Dartmouth (10:00 am).  Both matches wll be played at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts.
