PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The 17th-ranked Navy squash team earned a hard-fought 7-2 victory over No. 24 Drexel Friday evening in Philadelphia, pushing its record to 19-3 in the Mids’ final competition of the calendar year.
Navy dropped a tough 9-1 decision Thursday evening to 14th-ranked Penn, but bounced back on Friday to earn a solid victory against one of the up-and-coming teams in college squash.
“We played a much better match tonight,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. “I was really pleased with the way the team rebounded. I was especially happy for Jim Kacergis who came up with a big win at the No. 2 position.”
Three of the Mids’ seven wins came by way of five-game victories, including the No. 2 position where sophomore Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) fought his way back from a 2-1 deficit to earn a victory over Drexel rookie Ibrahim Bakir. Kacergis won the final two games, 11-9 and 11-8.
Also coming from behind was team captain John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), who jumped ahead by winning the opening game against Mark Lindsey, but then dropped two in a row to fall behind. Richey rallied with wins in the fourth and fifth to take the match.
Senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) won the first two games of his match against Drexel freshman Mike Dolente at the No. 3 spot, 11-4 and 11-6, but Dolente evened the match with a pair of wins. Bouchard pulled out the match in the fifth with an 11-7 victory.
Sophomore Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) was the lone player on the roster to win both of his matches during their Philly stay, capping off the trip with a 3-1 victory over freshman Joey Gingold at No. 6. Gingold opened the match with an 11-7 win, however Barry battled back with hard-fought wins, 13-11, 12-10, 12-10.
Senior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) and freshmen Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) and Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) also earned wins, while senior Jack Shinnick (Shrewsbury, N.J.) picked up a 3-0 sweep over Kevin Sacherman in an exhibition match.
Navy will be back in action on Friday when it faced 24th-ranked Drexel at 4:00 pm.
