Navy Pair Wins Baltimore Doubles Title, Preps for National Championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy tandem of Jack Herold (Sr / Chicago, Ill.) and Senen Ubina (Jr / Greenwich, Conn.) topped teammates Jamie Kjorlien (Jr / Greenwich, Conn.) and Jack Lentz (Fr / Philadelphia, Pa.) in three games (15-6, 15-7, 15-10) in an all-Navy final to win the Maine Maryland at Meadow Mill Doubles Squash Tournament this past weekend.
Top-seeded Herold and Ubina punched their way into the finals match after sweeping (15-2, 15-10, 15-7) Stefan Reichenstein and Philip Shin.
Meanwhile, Kjorlien and Lentz won a nail-biter against Bo Cashman and Christopher Haley in their opener. Cashman and Haley won the opening game, 15-11, before the Navy duo came back to defeat their foes 15-13, 15-12, 15-14. Kjorlien and Lentz again needed four games to advance to the finals, dealing Syed Bukhari and Douglas Rice a 15-11, 7-15, 15-4, 15-8 loss.
Brothers Michael Kacergis (So / Malvern, Pa.) and John Kacergis (Jr / Malvern, Pa.) also competed in the tournament, dropping a 3-1 decision (10-15, 15-9, 15-11, 15-12) to Bukhari and Rice in the opening round.
The Maine Maryland at Meadow Mill Doubles Squash Tournament provided the Navy players the experience and preparation needed as they focus on this weekend’s U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship in Philadelphia. This will be the seventh straight year head coach Craig Dawson has sent at least one Navy duo to the Intercollegiate Doubles Championship. Navy has claimed the title in each of the last two years (2016 - Randy Beck and JackHerold, 2015 - Bill Kacergis & Senen Ubina) and three of the last four (2013 - Andrew McGuinness & Hunter Beck). A Navy team has played in the finals of each of the last five doubles national championships.
