Mids Play Host to Navy Squash Veterans Weekend Round Robin
Nov. 8, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A week after putting together a 7-0 record at the Navy Squash Invitational, the Midshipmen will be back in action this weekend when they will play host to the Navy Squash Veterans Weekend Round Robin. The three-day event, 11-team event kicks off on Friday with the Midshipmen playing host to Kenyon at 4:00 pm at Halsey Field House International Squash Courts, followed by a 6:00 pm match against Johns Hopkins.
Navy opened the season a week ago with seven-consecutive 9-0 sweeps, including a victory over Virginia last Friday in the opener. The Mids were anchored by sophomore Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) who is the team’s No. 1 player and is one of four sophomores among the ladder last weekend. Second-year standout Colin Barry, who led the Mids a year ago in wins with a 22-6 record, sat out last weekend battling an ankle injury. Also sidelined for the first weekend of play was junior Hunter Beck who has been among the ladder since his arrival in Annapolis.
Last weekend gave Navy fans an opportunity to see senior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore John Hsu (Manhassett, N.Y.) play. Both players saw action in a handful of matches a year ago, but played in all seven matches last weekend. Both players have undefeated career records, as Walker stands 12-0 and Hsu is now 16-0. Additionally, freshmen Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) and Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) made their debuts, each rattling off seven straight victories.
Meanwhile, senior team captain John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) became just the fifth player during Craig Dawson’s 13 years as head coach to register 75 wins. Richey, who has more wins than any other player on the current Navy roster with 75, would also be just the fifth player to reach 80 wins, as well.
Senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) will likely join Richey on the list of 75-plus win players, as he heads into the weekend with 73 victories.
In addition to its Friday schedule, Navy will face Hobart (Saturday, 11:00 am), Washington, St. Louis (Saturday, 5:00 pm), Denison (Sunday, 9:00 am) and Georgetown (Sunday, 11:00 am).
