Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
4th Season

Alma Mater:
Providence '98

Scott Friedholm enters his fourth season as an assistant coach of the Navy baseball program, working with the pitchers. Since his arrival in Annapolis, he has guided the pitching staff to a 4.30 ERA in 167 games with the three-highest single-season strikeout totals in program history.

Last spring, Friedholm coached the Midshipmen to a 4.77 team ERA over a school-record 496.1 innings of work. Navy's team ERA ranked 67th nationally, while its miniscule 3.17 walks per nine innings placed the Mids 34th in the country. The Midshipmen also punched out 401 batters on the year, marking the second time in school history and as many years that they fanned over 400 opponents in a year.

The bullpen also performed well under Friedholm's guidance in 2008, evidenced by a school-record 15 saves and 12 wins in 187.1 innings of work. The Midshipmen have totaled more than 10 saves in each of his first-three years with Navy, prior to which the school record for saves in a season was eight.

Following the 2008 campaign, Navy pitchers Mitch Harris (13th round, St. Louis) and Oliver Drake (43rd round, Baltimore) were selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. It was the first time in school history that two pitchers were selected by a professional franchise in the same year, while Harris became the first Navy player drafted twice in his career (2007, 24th round, Atlanta).

Last year, Friedholm developed a staff that ranked 20th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.0) and 34th in ERA (3.88). Navy was one of only 14 schools in the nation to rank among the top 35 in both categories, with 12 of those teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament and seven going in as the top seed in their regions.

Navy's 3.88 ERA in 2007 was the lowest by a Midshipmen pitching staff since the 1995 team produced a 3.63 mark. The 2007 Mids set school records for strikeouts (407) and innings pitched (457.1), while ranking fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (8.01). While the Navy pitchers attacked the strikezone, they issued only 3.52 walks per nine innings and limited the opposition to a meager .248 batting average.

During the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft, right-hander Mitch Harris was selected in the 24th round by the Atlanta Braves organization.

In his first year with the Mids in 2006, Friedholm oversaw a pitching staff that made the largest ERA improvement in school history and fifth-best turnaround in the country. Inheriting a staff that posted a 6.38 ERA in 2005, Navy's pitchers combined for a 4.20 ERA in 2006.

Under the tutelage of Friedholm, the Midshipmen also bested the previous school records for strikeouts (364) and saves (14). Also, right-handed pitcher Mitch Harris became the first Navy hurler to earn All-American honors in 20 years.

Friedholm served the pitching coach on Kostacopoulos's coaching staff at Maine from 2002-05. During that time, he oversaw a pitching staff that guided the Black Bears to two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2005, Maine's pitching staff held Southern Miss to two runs in a 12-2 victory in the NCAA Regional, the program's first tournament win since 1991.

In his four seasons directing the pitching corps, Friedholm had two of his pitchers drafted by MLB organizations. Over the past three seasons, the Black Bears pitching staffs recorded a team ERA of 3.74 in 2003, 3.68 in 2004 and 4.13 in 2005.

Prior to his time in Maine, Friedholm served as the pitching coach with Bryant in Smithfield, R.I. from 2000-01. In those two seasons, his pitching staff paved the way to set school records in both overall and Northeast-10 Conference wins in consecutive years.

Friedholm signed a free agent contract with the Tampa bay Devil Rays organization in June of 1998, where reported to the St. Petersburg Devil Rays of the Class A Florida State League. In 1999, he attended the Devil Rays' spring training camp.

Friedholm also played his first two seasons under Kostacopoulos during his collegiate career at Providence College. As a freshman in 1995, the four-year letterwinner was part of a group that won 44 games and a program-best 16 Big East Conference contests en route to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. In 1996, Friedholm earned All-Big East and All-Region honors. During his senior season in 1998, he hit .395 with 13 home runs and a school-record 66 runs batted in, racking up third-team ABCA All-American honors.

Friedholm and his wife, Angie, reside in Annapolis.
