SEVERN, Md. - Navy freshman outfielder Michael Speciale (Pearland, Texas) scored three times and drove in three runs as the Midshipmen slugged past Coppin State, 15-2, at Joe Cannon Stadium on Wednesday night. With the win, Navy improved to 24-12 on the year. The Eagles dropped to 0-29 with the loss.
Wednesday night's game was delayed an hour and a half, as both teams waited for umpires that were called to work the game after umpiring games in the area earlier in the day. The game was called after seven innings due to rain.
"I'm quite pleased that we were able to get some action for our guys tonight," stated Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "The whole team did a nice job of keeping in the game, not only the players on the field, but the bench as well. Now we focus our attention to our four-game set at Lehigh."
Speciale's three runs scored and three RBIs were both career highs, while his double to right-center in the seventh was his second in last-three games. The Navy freshman finished his evening with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate.
Navy took advantage of two Coppin State errors, which led to two unearned runs, in opening up a 5-0 lead after one inning. The Midshipmen extended their advantage to 9-0 in the second, capped by freshman third baseman Drew Lydon's (White Plains, Md.) two-run double to the gap in left-center.
After the Eagles plated their first run of the game in the fifth, Navy answered with six runs in the seventh. The Midshipmen sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, pounding out four hits, walking three times and once hit by a pitch.
Ten different Mids scored a run, while eight batters recorded a hit and eight drove in at least one run. Junior designated hitter Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI, while sophomore first baseman Jack Ferrick (Stafford, Va.) also posted a 2-for-3 effort at the dish with two walks and a run scored.
The Midshipmen walked eight times on the evening and twice were hit by a pitch, while only striking out twice.
Senior southpaw Daniel Kovalcik (Westwood, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the year in his first start of the year. He yielded only one hit and no walks in two scoreless innings of work with three strikeouts. Freshman Jonathan Berkowitz (Parkland, Fla.) logged two innings of relief, while freshman Chris Murray (Navarre, Fla.), freshman Alec Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.) and junior Mark Guadagnini (Virginia Beach, Va.) each threw one inning.
Navy (24-12, 5-3 in the Patriot League) will head on the road to take on defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (11-18-1, 1-7 in the Patriot League) in a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday at Murray H. Goodman Field in Bethlehem, Pa.
