The Navy baseball team will play its first home game of the 2013 season this Wednesday when it hosts Coppin State at 2 p.m. at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Navy enters the game at 2-1 after winning twice at Norfolk State last weekend. Coppin State is 0-3 after being swept at No. 14 Arizona.
Midweek Quick Hitters
The Patriot League honored a trio of Midshipmen after their performances in taking two of three games from Norfolk State last weekend. David Wiedeman was named Patriot League Player of the week, Ben Nelson was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Robert Currie was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday. Wiedeman went 4-for-10 on the weekend and his three hits in the series finale were a career high, while the three RBIs tied a single-game best. Nelson scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six to earn his second straight Opening Day start. Currie had a hit in all three games of the series as he batted .308 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Junior outfielder Brandon Beans tied his career high with four hits in Saturday's 13-1 win over NSU ... Beans went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs scored and also stole a base in the final game of the series.
Beans and Robert Currie had hits in all three games last weekend.
Senior infielder Dylan Wheeler tied his career high with three RBIs in Saturday's win over NSU ... Wheeler went 2-for-4 in the game.
Navy had two freshmen - Currie (center field) and Drew Hayes (second base) - in its Opening Day lineup for the first time since 2008 when Nick Driscoll and Jonathan Wright both started ... In total, five Midshipmen made their collegiate debuts last weekend, including: Currie, Hayes, Connor Deneen, Luke Gillingham and Sam Sorenson.
Senior reliever Joel Rinehart picked up a save in the season opener to give him a career total of 13; he is now three saves shy of tying JD Melton's school record.
Navy's 23 runs against Norflk State was its highest-run total in the first three games of a season since scoring 29 in 2010.
Navy in Home Openers
Navy has an all-time record of 77-37-3 in home openers, while head coach Paul Kostacopoulos is 4-2-1 in home openers at Navy. Last season, Navy defeated UMES, 21-1, on Feb. 22 in the home opener.
About Coppin State
Coppin State opened its 2013 season this past weekend with a three-game set at No. 14 Arizona where the defending national champions took all three contests. The Eagles nearly pulled off the upset in the final game of the series, tying the game at 9-9, but eventually lost, 13-9.
Sophomore David Hamlett leads the team with a .222 batting average and four RBIs, courtesy of an inside-the-park home run.
Navy leads the all-time series with Coppin State, 14-4-1, since the two programs first met in 1992.
The Midshipmen will travel to Kinston, N.C., for the third-annual Freedom Classic where they will meet Air Force in a four-game series. Game one of the series is slated for 6 p.m. at historic Grainger Stadium.
