CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For their efforts on the mound this past weekend, Navy baseball pitchers Wes Olson (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) and Ben Nelson (Fr./Winter Springs, Fla.) have been recognized as the Patriot League Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
During Saturday's victory over Iona, Olson fired seven shutout innings of three-hit baseball with three walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. The Navy right-hander needed only 83 pitches to record his 21 outs on the afternoon, which was helped by two double plays. Over his final-four innings of work, he allowed only one hit and one walk.
In his collegiate debut against Delaware State on Friday, Nelson came out of the bullpen and settled the game down en route to his first-career win. He tossed 4.2 innings of two-hit, shutout baseball with only one walk and four strikeouts. The Navy freshman did not allow a hit over his final-three innings and induced eight groundouts during his outing.
For both Olson and Nelson, it was the first time that they have earned Patriot League weekly honors.
The Midshipmen (3-0), off to their best start since 1981, will return to action tomorrow with their 2010 home opener against Maryland Eastern Shore (0-3) at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m., and admission is free for all home Navy baseball games. Live stats will also be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
