Sipe Honored as League Rookie of the Week
Feb. 24, 2009
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Following his stellar career debut against Pittsburgh, Navy baseball right-handed pitcher Zach Sipe (Fr./Huffman, Texas) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
In his first-career appearance and start on Sunday, Sipe went out and fired 5.2 innings of two-hit, one-run baseball with three walks and seven strikeouts to earn the win. The Navy freshman settled in after the second inning, where he allowed both hits and only run of the game. From that point on, he retired 11 of the final-13 batters he faced without yielding a base knock.
With the help of Sipe, Navy defeated Pittsburgh, 3-1, to close out its weekend at the Service Academy Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn. That win was the 100th in head coach Paul Kostacopoulos's three-plus-year tenure with the Mids.
The Midshipmen (1-1) will host Delaware State (3-0) in their home opener tomorrow at 2 p.m. Admission to all games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium is free and live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
