ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy baseball team will kick off the home portion of its 2018 schedule beginning on Tuesday with a pair of back-to-back mid-week contests. First up will be a matchup for the Mids (4-2) versus the UMBC Retrievers (1-2) on Tuesday before facing off with the Coppin State Eagles (1-3-1) on Wednesday. Both games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium are set for 2 p.m. first pitches.
Tuesday's matchup is scheduled to see a pair freshman right-handed pitchers toe the rubber as Tommy Goodridge will get the call for the Mids with Cameron Taylor going for the Retrievers. Goodridge, a native of San Diego, will be making his first collegiate start after pitching in relief at Wake Forest on Feb. 17 and versus Air Force on Feb. 24. Against the Demon Deacons, he hurled 1.2 innings and got the win for the Mids in the team's come-from-behind 5-2 victory. One week later versus the Falcons in Kinston, N.C., Goodridge got the save with a scoreless ninth inning in Navy's 6-4 win.
Taylor has thrown one inning so far for UMBC in 2018, a scoreless frame against St. John's on Feb. 24.
On Wednesday, the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Jared Leins is set to get the starting nod for the Mids. Seeing action the past two weekends in long relief roles, Leins tossed 2.1 innings of two-hit, one-run ball versus Georgetown on Feb. 18 before coming back this past Saturday against Air Force and pitching 4.0 innings of scoreless, three-hit action. Leins struck out seven Falcons and earned his first collegiate victory.
Devin Rivera Ozuna is slated to start for Coppin State. The junior right-hander started last Wednesday in the Eagles' 4-4 tie at Mount St. Mary's. He pitched 5.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks.
