Navy Duo Claims League Weekly Awards
March 2, 2010
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy baseball second baseman Matthew Curley (Sr./Boston, Mass.) and left-handed pitcher Sam Long (Jr./Newnan, Ga.) were named the Patriot League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Curley hit .500 (10-for-20) on the week with a double, six runs scored, seven RBIs, two walks, a hit by pitch and a stolen base. In the series finale against Air Force on Sunday, the Navy senior reached base safely in all six of his plate appearances. He went 4-for-4 with a double, walk, hit by pitch, two runs scored and two RBIs to help the Mids come back in the late innings to defeat the Falcons, 10-9, in 11 innings.
Earlier in the week during Navy's 12-10 comeback victory against Maryland Eastern Shore, he went 3-for-6 with a stolen base, two runs scored and three RBIs. Clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth with a runner on second with two outs, Curley made a diving stab on a grounder up the middle, got to his feet and delivered a strike to first to end the threat and preserve the lead.
The Navy second baseman enters this week with an eight-game hitting streak, which dates back to last spring, and is hitting .438 (14-for-32) this year with a team-best 12 runs scored and .550 on-base percentage.
For Curley, it is the first time in his career that he's been recognized as the league's player of the week.
In the series opener against Air Force on Friday, Long fired six innings of four-hit, two-run baseball with only walk and nine strikeouts to earn the win over his 96-pitch outing. His nine strikeouts over six innings marked the 10th time over his 12 career starts that he has fanned at least as many batters as innings pitched.
Long has fanned 17 batters over his 9.2 innings this spring, good for an average of 15.83 strikeouts per nine frames. Last season, he posted the third-highest average in school history with 11.60 strikeouts per nine innings. In addition to his strikeout abilities this year, he's also limited the opposition to a .171 (6-for-35) batting average and owns a 2.79 ERA.
The league weekly honors are the second for Long in his career, as he first was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week following his complete game no-hitter at Lehigh last season.
The Midshipmen (6-1) will return to action this Thursday at 2 p.m., when they host Coppin State (0-5) at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Admission is free for all Navy home games and live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
