March 8, 2010

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy baseball right-handed pitcher Johnny Schoberl (Fr./Milford, N.J.) was recognized as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

In his first-career start against Coppin State last Thursday, Schoberl fired five shutout innings of six-hit baseball with no walks and six strikeouts to earn his first-career win.

On the year, Schoberl has appeared in three games and sports a 1-0 record with a 5.62 ERA over 8.0 innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.

Five different Navy players have claimed a Patriot League weekly honor this spring. Sam Long (Jr./Newnan, Ga.) and Wes Olson (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) have both been named the league's pitcher of the week earlier this year, while Matthew Curley (Sr./Boston, Mass.) claimed league player-of-the-week honors and Ben Nelson (Fr./Winter Springs, Fla.) was distinguished as league rookie of the week.

The Midshipmen (10-1), off to their best start since 1981, will continue their 13-game homestand against Mount St. Mary's tomorrow at 2 p.m. Admission is free for all Navy baseball home games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium and live stats will be available via GameTracker on
