Nelson Named Conference Pitcher of the Week After 13 Strikeout Performance
March 18, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior pitcher Ben Nelson was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, it was announced by the conference office. It marks the third time this season and fifth time in his career he has garnered the award.
Nelson tossed one of the best games of his career last Saturday in a 6-5 Navy win over Yale. The right-hander retired the first nine hitters of the game and went on to rack up a career-high 13 strikeouts as he improved to 4-1 on the season. He allowed just five hits in eight-complete innings and didn't issue a walk as he improved to 4-1 on the season.
Having previously been named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 18 and 25, Nelson is the first Navy pitcher since Sam Long in 2010 to earn the award three times in a season.
The native of Winter Springs, Fla., has a 1.30 ERA along with 39 Ks and just three walks this season.
Navy will begin a season-long six-game home stand this Wednesday when it takes on Delaware State at 3 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium.
