Baseball Closes Home Stand on Wednesday Against UMES

The Navy baseball team will close out its six-game home stand on Wednesday when it hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore at 3 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium. The Mids are coming off a weekend in which they took three of four games from Princeton.

Midweek Quick Hitters
• The Navy pitching staff leads the Patriot League with a 4.16 ERA and a .258 opponent batting average ... With 177 strikeouts and 65 walks, Navy's strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.72 ranks 26th in the nation.

• Navy is hitting .309 over the five-game home stand - .049 above its current season average ... Robert Currie (.300), Greg Dupell (.316), Brandon Beans (.409) and Dave Milanes are all hitting .300 or better over the last five games.

• The Mids rank first in the conference in doubles with 37 ... Dupell's 10 doubles also leads the league and ranks 22nd in the nation.

Ben Nelson continues to rank among the nation's best this season ... With 45 strikeouts and just four walks in 41 2/3rds innings this year, his strikeout-to-walk ratio of 11.25 is eighth best in the country ... His five wins rank ninth in the nation and his walks allowed per nine innings average of 0.86 ranks 25th nationally.

• With 11 RBIs in five games last week, Milanes was not only named the Patriot League Player of the Week, but he also took the conference lead in RBIs with 16 ... Dupell ranks second in the conference with 15 RBIs.

• Milanes' current six-game hitting streak is the longest by a Midshipman this season.

• With three wins in its last six games coming by one run, Navy has upped its record to 6-2 in one-run games this season.

• Led by Sam Sorenson's three saves, the Navy bullpen has a total of five already this season, which is just one shy of matching its total from all of last season.

• Four of the Mids' last five victories have been in come-from-behind fashion.

Under first-year head coach Pedro Swan, the Hawks are 5-19 entering Tuesday's game against George Washington ... As a team, UMES is hitting .255, led by Byron Campbell (.366) and Brandon Schott (.348) ... The pitching staff is currently sporting a team ERA of 6.10 and opponents are hitting .330 against the Hawks ... UMES has taken on a pair of Patriot League teams this season, going 0-2 vs. Lehigh and 2-2 against Lafayette ... Navy and UMES share two common opponents so far this season in Coppin State and Norfolk State; the Hawks dropped two of three against both teams.

Navy will begin Patriot League play when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to meet Army this weekend. The two rivals will play a doubleheader at noon on both Sunday and Monday.
