Long Recognized as ECAC Pitcher of the Week
March 30, 2010
CENTREVILLE, Mass. - One day after earning Patriot League Pitcher-of-the-Week laurels, Navy baseball southpaw Sam Long (Jr./Newnan, Ga.) has been named the ECAC Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
This is the second time in Long's career that he's been recognized as ECAC Pitcher of the Week, as he first received the honor following his complete-game no-hitter at Lehigh last spring.
Long recorded his first-career shutout against UMBC and the first for any Navy pitcher in two years, as he scattered three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He faced only three batters over the minimum and needed just 82 pitches to get through his seven innings of work. Among the three runners to reach base during the afternoon, none of them were able to get past second base.
For the year, Long is 3-1 with a 3.37 ERA in 34.2 innings with only six walks, two of which have occurred in the last-31.0 innings, and 42 strikeouts. He has allowed the opposition to hit a mere .239 (32-for-134).
The Midshipmen (17-7) will return to action this Wednesday at 6 p.m., when they head to Shipley Field to take on Maryland. Live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
