Watch Nelson's performance vs. Lehigh
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the second time this spring, Navy baseball right-hander Ben Nelson (Fr./Winter Springs, Fla.) has been recognized as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Nelson is the first player in the Patriot League to earn rookie-of-the-week honors twice this spring. As a team, a Navy player has been named the league's rookie of the week four times in 2010.
In his Patriot League debut and second-career start against Lehigh on Sunday, Nelson fired eight shutout innings with only four hits and one walk allowed, to go along with five strikeouts. He allowed only one runner to reach second base during the entire game, which came in the second inning, and yielded just one hit over his final-five innings of work.
Sunday's performance wasn't Nelson's only duty on the week, as he fired 1.2 hitless, scoreless innings of relief at Maryland on Wednesday night.
For the year, Nelson is 3-2 with a miniscule 2.35 ERA in 30.2 innings with only eight walks and 18 strikeouts. The Navy right-hander has held the opposition to a .235 batting average.
The Midshipmen (19-10, 2-2 PL) return to action tomorrow with a 3 p.m. home contest against George Washington (16-10) before hosting service academy and Patriot League rival Army (12-9, 3-1 PL) for a four-game set in Annapolis on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to all home Navy baseball games at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium is free of charge.
