Sam Long Named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week
April 6, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - Two days after throwing the seventh complete-game no-hitter in program history, Navy southpaw Sam Long (So./Newnan, Ga.) has been named as one the Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week, it was announced by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday afternoon.
In a 3-1 series opening win at Lehigh last Saturday, Long did not allow a hit over his seven innings to post Navy's first complete-game no-hitter against a Patriot League opponent since Scott Kozink held Lehigh hitless on April 12, 1999. Long fired 110 pitches on the afternoon, 65 of which were strikes, with five walks and four strikeouts. He forced the Mountain Hawks into 11 groundball outs and induced a double play.
Long, who came into the week ranked second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings, owns a 3-0 record with a 2.94 ERA in 33.2 innings. He has struck out 47 batters and walked only 14, while holding the opposition to a .250 batting average (32-for-128).
The Midshipmen (11-17-1) will return to action tomorrow evening with a non-league contest at UMBC (4-18). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. and live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
