Nelson Claims Back-to-Back League Rookie-of-the-Week Awards
April 12, 2010
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the second-straight week, Navy baseball right-hander Ben Nelson (Fr./Winter Springs, Fla.) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Against service academy rival and defending league champion Army on Sunday, Nelson rose to the occasion to earn his first-career complete game in just his third-career start. The Navy rookie scattered six hits and two runs over seven innings with only one walk and two strikeouts. He was able to induce 12 groundouts in retiring the Black Knights in 107 pitches.
This spring, Nelson leads the Patriot League in ERA by nearly a full run with an impressive 2.39 mark. He is tied for the team lead in wins with four and has limited the opposition to a .234 batting average of his 37.2 innings with only nine walks and 20 strikeouts.
In Patriot League play, Nelson is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in 15.0 innings with only two walks and five strikeouts. League hitters are batting just .192 against the rookie right-hander with no extra-base hits.
Nelson is the sixth player in Patriot League history to earn rookie-of-the-week distinction in back-to-back weeks. His three rookie-of-the-week honors this spring are just one shy of tying the Patriot League record of four held by Army's Cole White in 2005.
The Midshipmen (21-13) will head on the road to Princess Anne, Md., to take on Maryland Eastern Shore (2-28) this Wednesday at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
