CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
Navy senior catcher Dave Milanes and freshman Luke Gillingham were both honored by the Patriot League on Monday for their efforts in helping the Mids pick up a pair of wins yesterday against Holy Cross. Milanes was named the Patriot League Player of the Week and Gillingham the Rookie of the Week.
Milanes went 9-for-16 (.563) in the four-game set against the Crusaders, including a combined 7-for-9 with three RBIs in Sunday's 5-1 and 7-1 victories. He also scored five runs in the series and his .611 on-base percentage led all Mids.
The native of Iselin, N.J., is the first conference player with more than one Player of the Week honor this season. The first weekly honor of Milanes' career came on March 25.
Gillingham allowed one run in seven innings to lead Navy to a 7-1 win in the series finale on Sunday. He scattered five hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven batters in the win. Gillingham, a native of Coronado, Calif., gave up just one run after a bases-loaded no-out jam in the first, then did not surrender another hit until the sixth inning. He also pitched four scoreless innings with three hits allowed and five strikeouts against Coppin State on Wednesday to finish with one run and eight hits allowed and 12 strikeouts in 11.0 innings for the week.
The award is the first for Gillingham and he joins Robert Currie (Feb. 18), Sam Sorenson (March 25) and Connor Deneen (April 2) as other Mids that have garnered the honor this season.
