Jared Leins Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the third time in 2018, freshman RHP Jared Leins has been selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. A key member of Navy's bullpen, Leins was recognized for his efforts in three games this past week. In all three appearances, the Raleigh, N.C. native held his opponents scoreless.
The Mids' most-used reliever this season, Leins pitched in three of Navy's four games this week and hurled 4.2 innings of one-hit shutout baseball. In his first appearance, he held the line in a 3-2 setback on Wednesday versus Georgetown as Navy trailed early 3-0 before scratching out two runs in the 6th. Later in the week, Leins was credited with the victory in game one on Saturday against Lehigh as he came in with two on and one out in the seventh inning of a tied game and pitched around the jam to allow the Mids to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh. In his third and final appearance of the week, the freshman closed out Sunday' victory against Lehigh with two hitless shutout innings of relief over the eighth and ninth frames. For the week, he held opponents to a .077 batting average and had strikeouts in all three outings over 4.2 combined innings.
This is Leins’s third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award in 2018 and 12th weekly honor for the Navy program this season.
Navy will be back in action this Wednesday, April 18 with a key conference matchup versus Bucknell at home. First pitch between the Mids and Bison is set for 3 p.m.
