ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Before the Navy baseball team exits the diamond for the classroom and focuses on its final exams for the spring semester, the Mids (36-14) will face off with the UMBC Retrievers (16-18) in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at home. The action at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium is slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch. This will be the first meeting between the two local teams as a prior matchup was washed out and cancelled for March 15.
Last year, Navy dropped both games versus UMBC with a 5-4 loss on March 23 in Baltimore and a 6-4 setback on April 19 in Annapolis. In a similar storyline to their first meeting in Baltimore that saw multiple momentum swings and plenty of action in the ninth inning, the Navy and UMBC baseball teams played another memorable and hard fought game in Annapolis. After the Mids took the lead by a 4-3 margin in the sixth inning, the Retrievers came from behind in the top of the ninth to earn a 6-4 victory.
Stephen Born and Travis Blue highlighted Navy’s offensive attack with five of the team’s 11 total hits. Born tallied three hits, while Blue collected two, including a triple. On the mound, Colin Brady, J.P. Colton and Jackson Zoch threw 8.0 innings of six-hit, three-run ball.
For the third straight mid-week contest, freshman right-hander Nicholas Elder will get call to start in what is setting up to be a staff day … Slated to throw a predetermined number of pitches, Elder will give way to an assortment of Navy hurlers looking to get some work in … Elder has started twice for the Mids in his rookie season going 4.0 innings at UMES on April 12 and again 4.0 versus George Mason on April 19 ... Over four appearances and 10.2 total innings this season, Elder has not been scored on and has allowed nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
UMBC will counter with sophomore RHP Jacob Christian … The second-year hurler has appeared in nine games for the Retrievers in 2017 with six starts … He started the year as a member of UMBC’s starting weekend rotation … Most recently in mid-week action at Georgetown on April 26, he threw 5.0 innings and gave up one run on five hits and two walks … Over 38.0 innings, he’s posted a 7.34 ERA and a 2-2 record along with 41 strikeouts.
Navy vs. UMBC
The Midshipmen are 19-25 all-time versus the Retrievers in a series that dates back to 1978 … UMBC is currently on a four-game winning streak over Navy.
