ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Patriot League announced today that Navy sophomore pitcher Ben Nelson and reliever Preston Gainey were named Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, a day after helping the Midshipmen claim the regular-season league title.
It is the first Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honor for Nelson, who received rookie of the week accolades on four occasions last season. The award is the second of the season for Gainey.
Nelson struck out a career-high 10 batters as he fired his fourth complete game of the season in Navy's 4-2 win over Lafayette on Saturday. The right-hander from Winter Haven, Fla., allowed just two unearned runs off five hits and didn't issue a walk as he improved to 5-5 on the season. The win guaranteed Navy a spot in the conference tournament.
Nelson is now 5-5 on the season with a 5.68 ERA.
Gainey pitched the final two and two-thirds innings of Sunday's 4-2 win that secured the regular-season conference crown for Navy. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native didn't allow a hit and struck out three to earn his second save of the season.
In nine relief appearances this season, Gainey is 1-0 with an ERA of 3.13.
Navy's game scheduled for Tuesday at Maryland Eastern Shore has been moved to Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m. Wednesday's game at Delaware State will begin at 3 p.m.
