CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Two Navy baseball players were named to the All-Patriot League Team, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Relief pitcher Luke Roberts (So./Midland, N.C.) earned first-team all-league honors, while catcher Steven Soares (Jr./Coral Springs, Fla.) was recognized as a second-team all-league selection.

Roberts played a vital role out of the bullpen for the Mids this spring, as he posted a 2-0 record with a save and a miniscule 1.00 ERA over 27.0 innings during his 16 appearances. The Navy right-hander held the opposition to a .218 (22-for-101) batting average, while walking just four batters and striking out 19. In Patriot League play, he was 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings with just one walk and eight strikeouts. He earned his first-career win at Army on April 13, as he did not issue a free pass over 4.1 innings of relief with a career-best five strikeouts. Two weeks later at Holy Cross, he allowed just one run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen to close out a 12-11, coome-from-behind victory.

Soares finished his junior campaign with a .309 (43-for-139) batting average, to along with his 10 doubles, seven home runs, 23 RBIs and a .415 on-base percentage. The seven long balls were tied for the fifth-highest mark in school history and tied for sixth in the Patriot League this spring. Defensively, Soares threw out 37.9 percent (22-for-58) of all base stealers and committed just two errors behind the plate in 255 chances - good for a .992 fielding percentage. During league games, he batted .310 (18-for-58) with five doubles, four home runs, seven RBIs and a .603 slugging percentage - which ranked ninth in the league.

For both Roberts and Soares, Tuesday's all-league kudos are the first in their career.

The Midshipmen finished the 2009 campaign with a 20-26-1 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the Patriot League. Navy recorded its fourth-straight 20-win season and the 27th of the program's 114-year history.
