Stephen Born Repeats as CoSIDA Academic All-American
AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second straight year junior outfielder Stephen Born (Strafford, Pa.) was selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American. On Friday, Born was named as one of two outfielders on the third team. This announcement makes Born one of just three Mids in program history to be a two-time honoree and the first since Mike Leeney repeated in 1985 and 1986.
Born earned his way onto the All-America ballot after being named to the All-District II First Team on May 4. In total, 33 student-athletes from across the NCAA Division I ranks were selected over three teams. Born is one of eight honorees to be named a second time as he is joined by Auburn's P Cole Lipscomb, Hartford's IF David MacKinnon, Ball State's IF Caleb Stayton, Air Force's OF Russell Williams, Louisiana's P Dylan Moore, Georgia State's IF Justin Jones and Western Kentucky's OF Kaleb Duckworth.
Eastern Kentucky's Ben Fisher was selected as the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in recognition of his 3.97 GPA in biology in addition to ranking second in the NCAA in runs scored with 71 and third with 25 home runs.
Born, Navy's starting left fielder, is an operations research major with a 3.81 GPA in the classroom. On the field in 2017, Born hit .282 with 41 runs scored, 55 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 37 RBIs over 52 games. Additionally, the Pennsylvania native stole nine bases and fielded his position at 1.000 mark (88-88). Amongst his Patriot League counterparts, Born ranked fifth in runs scored, seventh in RBIs, ninth in stolen bases and tenth in doubles.
