Jared Leins Recognized as Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American
TUCSON, Ariz. – On Wednesday, the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America team was announced and amongst the deep and talented roster of first-year players, Navy right-handed pitcher Jared Leins was recognized. Selected by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Leins was one of 23 relief pitchers selected to the national team. The Raleigh, N.C. native becomes just the 11th different Midshipman in program history to garner such an accolade.
Leins stepped up immediately as a freshman and became one of the best closers in the entire Patriot League. A four-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Leins accumulated five saves, five wins, 52 strikeouts and a .197 opponents' batting average over 42.0 innings and 19 games as a freshman in 2018. He finished with a 3.21 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 11.1 strikeout/9-inning ratio. In the Patriot League individual standings, his five saves were tied for the league lead, while his .197 OBA was fourth-lowest, his 19 appearances were tied for sixth and his five victories were tied for seventh overall.
In Navy's single-season record books, Leins’ save total ranks seventh all-time. The durable right-hander threw 1.1 innings or more in 15 of his 19 appearances with outings of three or more innings on seven different occasions. He posted scoreless outings 12 times in 2018, including a stretch of play from Feb. 24 through March 24 in which he recorded 17.0 straight scoreless innings to lower his ERA to a season-low 0.44.
